PioneerLands.org: how it works, how it is built, and what to build next
A public-only review of Jo Bhakdi's AGI-era community, run by Pioneer Media OÜ. Facts come from the live site, its HTML, robots.txt, sitemap and production JavaScript bundles as fetched on Nov 3, 2026. Anything opinion-based is marked as a suggestion.
1. What the site is and how it works
The site title is "Pioneerlands | Predicting the Future, Engineering Reality", and its social card describes "simulations, forecasts, and tools for exploring and engineering the future." It combines a media layer, tools, an education program and a gated community.
Public surface (from sitemap.xml)
- Media and briefings:
/news,/briefings,/fed-day,/mergerwatch,/targets, plus verticals/pioneer/alpha,/pioneer/wealth,/pioneer/politics. - Academy:
/academy,/academy/qics, and Pioneer Academy with jobs, clubs, universities, an internship and role tracks (space, robotaxi, robots, AI chips, sales, editorial, campus lead, product, finance). - Company:
/careers(product builder, operations engineer, editorial),/about/media,/legal,/network,/membership. - Community:
/community/*is a client-side bounce into a members-only Circle forum. robots.txt blocks it on purpose and notes about 600 gated thread and profile URLs.
Membership ladder
| Tier | Price | Role in the funnel |
|---|---|---|
| Member | Free | Account, email capture, public content |
| Citizen | $9/mo | Entry paid tier; the bundle calls a sync-citizen-status function to mirror status into Circle |
| Citizen Plus | $99/mo | Premium tier |
| Patron | $200+/mo | Supporter tier with open-ended price |
Account flow
Sign-up is Supabase Auth with email confirmation. After login the app requests a Circle token (get-circle-auth-token) and syncs the profile (sync-circle-profile), so one login carries into the forum. In our own test, confirmation mail to a custom-domain inbox did not arrive, while Gmail worked.
2. Tech stack and code review
| Layer | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Hosting / CDN | Cloudflare (server: cloudflare, __cf_bm bot cookie), HSTS with includeSubDomains, nosniff, strict referrer policy |
| Builder | Lovable: /~flock.js analytics proxy, /__l5e/events script, a lovp_ project id in the context token |
| App | React, TanStack Query (query-vendor chunk), Radix UI, Sonner toasts, PWA manifest with 11 iOS splash screens |
| Data | Supabase tables named in the bundle: profiles, user_preferences, academy_unit_progress, video_calls, analytics_visits, analytics_pageviews, analytics_funnel_events, draupnir_* |
| Functions | get-circle-auth-token, sync-circle-profile, sync-citizen-status, video-calls, draupnir-provision, admin-impersonate, dev-signin-code |
| Observability | PostHog and Sentry references; first-party visit capture with UTMs and in-app browser detection |
Strengths
- Unusually thoughtful engineering comments in shipped code, for example a pre-boot chunk-reload guard so a tab open across a deploy does not go blank.
- robots.txt written per crawler with reasoning, and a clean sitemap of real content pages.
- JSON-LD Organization and WebSite graph, Open Graph tags,
lang="en". - Code splitting into vendor chunks; secure headers; first-party analytics that survive referrer stripping.
- Single sign-on into Circle means they did not have to build a forum.
Weaknesses
- Weight: initial JS is about 864 KB raw (about 258 KB gzipped) across four chunks, plus 265 KB CSS (44 KB gzipped).
- Fonts: one Google Fonts request loads 11 families (Inter, JetBrains Mono, Instrument Serif and Sans, IBM Plex Sans and Mono, Source Serif 4, Space Grotesk, Orbitron, Marcellus SC, Roboto Slab), render-blocking.
- Client rendering: content pages are a React SPA shell, so crawlers and link previews depend on JS or prerendering.
- Dev hooks in production: flag names such as
dev-admin-bypass,dev-citizen-bypassanddev-qualification-bypassship in the public bundle. We did not test them; they may well be server-guarded, but they reveal internals. - Email deliverability: confirmation mail failed to reach a non-Gmail inbox in our test.
3. Community and business model
The model is a classic content-to-community ladder: free media and tools pull in traffic, a free account captures email, a low-friction $9 tier converts the curious, and $99 and $200+ tiers monetize the most committed. The Academy and internships add a talent pipeline and youth reach, and careers pages recruit from the audience.
The $9 to $99 gap is wide. A clear, visible list of what Citizen Plus adds (live calls, tools, direct access to Jo) decides whether that tier works.
Outsourcing the forum to Circle is fast but splits identity and data across two systems, which is why the sync functions exist.
4. Plan for Eric: a community on the same idea
Positioning
Do not clone a global AGI forecast brand. Pick a niche Eric can own: "Builders of the Small AI Economy", a community for licensed practitioners and small-business owners (therapists, realtors, contractors) learning to run their practice with AI. It matches Ulric Studio's client base and Eric's LPC and software background, and it is rooted in Eugene and the Pacific Northwest for in-person meetups.
Core features (v1)
- Weekly briefing: "What AI changed for small practices this week".
- Tool library: prompt packs, website audits, intake and scheduling templates.
- Forum with spaces by profession, plus monthly live build calls.
- Showcase: members' before and after websites built with Ulric.
Stack
| Option | Pieces | Fit |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest | Astro static site on Cloudflare Pages + Circle or Skool + Stripe | Launch in a week |
| Owned | Astro or Next on Cloudflare + Supabase Auth and Postgres + Stripe + Discourse or a custom feed | Full data ownership, more build time |
Server-render public content (unlike a pure SPA), self-host 2 fonts, and use Postmark or Resend for transactional mail to avoid the deliverability problem seen above.
Tiers
| Tier | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Briefing, public tools |
| Practitioner | $12/mo | Forum, template library |
| Studio | $79/mo | Monthly group build call, site audit |
| Done-with-you | Custom | Ulric Studio site build, feeds the agency |
Launch plan (8 weeks)
- Weeks 1 to 2: landing page, waitlist, first 4 briefings.
- Weeks 3 to 4: forum and Stripe live, invite the existing 51 demo leads and Ulric clients.
- Weeks 5 to 6: first live call, first Eugene meetup.
- Weeks 7 to 8: open paid tiers, publish member showcases.
Estimated monthly costs (suggestion, typical list prices)
| Item | Approx. |
|---|---|
| Cloudflare Pages | $0 |
| Supabase | $0 to $25 |
| Circle or Skool | about $49 to $99 |
| Email (Resend/Postmark) | $0 to $20 |
| Stripe | 2.9% + 30c per charge |
Verify current pricing before committing; spending needs Eric's OK.
5. Constructive build suggestions for Jo
Cut the font request to two or three families and self-host them. This is likely the cheapest performance win.
Prerender or server-render public pages (news, briefings, academy) so search and link previews do not depend on JS.
Strip dev-* bypass flags and dev sign-in from production builds, and confirm admin-impersonate is strictly role-checked server side.
Move auth email to a dedicated sender with SPF, DKIM and DMARC aligned, and offer magic link or Google sign-in as a fallback.
Make the tier comparison explicit on /membership, and add a yearly option for Citizen.
Long term, consider bringing the forum in-house or into a single identity store to remove the Circle sync layer.
